Scratch-building a 36’ Wooden Boxcar
In 2024, Jim Demarco MMR presented a multi-part clinic on scratchbuilding a boxcar that could qualify for a Merit Award. The first two steps were presented during the NERx virtual convention in April. Steps three and four could then be completed by the builder at the workbench and then brought to the Northeastern Regional Convention held in Rochester that September for final detailing.
This project is intended primarily for those new to scratch-building, but those experienced builders may also learn some new techniques. Steps 1 and 2 cover the construction of the boxcar core and underframe and were presented at NERx in March 2024. Steps 3 and 4 will cover the siding, roofing, roof walk, etc. Written instructions for steps 1-4 are available from the link below. There may be minor differences with the NERx presentations and the written instructions. The model will qualify as scratch-built and hopefully be Merit Award worthy.
